Perhaps love is a permanent thing, but when we fall in love, we do so because of the way a certain person is. Carver makes the point that modern, on-again, off-again relationships have little to do with love. In the story, the four main characters, Mel, Terri, Laura and Nick, are having a discussion about love while drinking gin. These couples speak about love and what it means to them. How can we really describe what a feeling is or means? Mel McGinnis is a cardiologist. An author will deliberately incorporate a symbol into his or her literary work, which alone would mean nothing, but in context carries out a point the author is trying to make. The truth is there is not a set definition for the word love because it has a different meaning to each individual.
Looking further into this analysis, Limbaugh is an ultra conservative, right-wing talk show host whose material appeals to a white middle-class audience. All of these people seem to have a distorted view about what love is. It brings great controversy between people because no one really knows how to define it. The three couples in the story represent different stages of marriage. This reveals to me that Mel is emotionally closed off and concealed from other people. His only real love lies with his children, unfortunately Mel allows his conflict with his ex wife to block him from calling his them.
Terri's idea of real love is the most valid out of the group at the table. When people are in love, they are in a mental, physical, and emotional state which they can not understand, control, and much less explain. However in the end True love is more dominant because people learn to love again as Raymond Carter shows in his story. Terri, like the rest of the party, is on her second marriage. Mel declares that if he could go back in time, he would enjoy being a knight in armor to shield him from other people.
That is what Carver is trying to express through his short story, that there is no clear definition on love. The first discussion is about Terri's ex husband, Ed. The conversation is a little sloppy, and the characters make some comments which could either be meaningless because of excessive alcohol in the bloodstream, or could be the characters' true feelings because of excessive alcohol in the bloodstream. A key piece of evidence demonstrating her understanding of love is her remark to Laura and Nick. But do these characters experienced true love or even know what true love is or is it just lust and mostly physical attraction. Most parents would die for there children without a moments hesitation. This balance was delicate and, as I would soon find out, that change was not to last.

Brent does a good job analyzing the words spoken and seems to carefully craft a conclusion on why he is saying those things.

There are a few characteristics and symbols in the story that are really important to understand in order to define what a real love is and find the intention thrown out the story. Even if the story is somewhat realistic or completely fictional, the story will describe at least one common experience we have all encounter as humans. Mel's relationship with Terri, or any other women that he may have encountered in the past is distant and indifferent as to who they are inside. Nick, the narrator, sits back and observes the feedback from Mel who is confused and lost. Whether we are falling in love, falling out of love, or going through challenges with the people we love, we all seek to find and explore the meaning of love.
I never looked at those words and thought he was protecting his heart in some way, but after reading this, I believe maybe he was. He seems to be a leader.
